The Winter Olympics put Insbruck on the map, but it's a beautifully quaint little alpine city. I count it among the most beautiful and scenic I've seen in Europe. It's not very big, but it makes a nice little day trip, or maybe even a weekend trip. The first time I went it was very cloudy, which gave me the wrong impression of Innsbruck. The city is nice but it's the Alps, which seem to swallow Innsbruck, that make it complete. It has a slow pace, and it's perfect for strolling and relaxing. Innsbruck is the capital of the Tirol region, which is the most mountainous in Austria. If you're into winter sports or hiking, this is the place to be. And, due to Innsbruck being a popular place for backpakers and university students, it has a surprisingly lively nightlife scene.
