Frankfurt Frankfurt gets overlooked quite a bit and that's unfortunate. It really is a great city, and if you can't have fun there, there's something wrong with you. It gets a bad rap because when you get out of the train station, you're right in the middle of the red light district, so that's everybody's first impression. But explore a little further and you'll find that this city can be as cosmopolitan as any other in Europe. Where else can you see a 1,000 year old cathedral next to a modern day skyscraper? Frankfurt has a definite neo-classic feel to it. I remember the first time I went to Frankfurt...the first thing I saw was the sleaze of the aforementioned red light district. I walked a little further and found myself in the middle of a rather upscale shopping and hotel district. Continuing on, I came to one of the opera houses where I saw exquisitely dressed Germans clad in tuxedos and evening gowns. I crossed the bridge and went to the Sachsenhausen, and spent the rest of the night surrounded by travelers from all over the world. If you go to Frankfurt and have a little bit of time to kill, I'd recommend a great English pub called The Fox & The Hound. It's nothing special, but they have authentic English bitters, as well as the ubiquitous Guinness on tap, and Sky Sports is always on. Good drink, good food, and good atmosphere. And if you are in Frankfurt, don't leave without trying the ApfelWein (Apple Wine), a local speciality. Click on photo to enlarge... Here's the Sachsenhausen:
