A cosmopolitan city of about 240,000 on the German border, Strasbourg was my first foray into "the Motherland", also known as France. It was 4th of July, 1998, and I spent an enjoyable 3 days there, experiencing a blend of French and German culture. History buffs will note that the Alsace and Lorraine region, of which Strasbourg is the capital, has gone back and forth between France and Germany several times, which gives the city its unique character. It was a very special weekend for another reason; the World Cup, which was being hosted by France that year, was into the Quarterfinal round, and my good fortune found me in a bar next to the Cathedral watching the France-Italy match (France won on penalty kicks and would, of course, go on to capture their first World Cup). For an American who grew up watching European football, it was indescribable. one of those memories you keep forever. I've been to Strasbourg 3 times, and enjoyed it each time. Word of warning - there's not much in the way of nightlife.

Strasbourg pretty much begins and ends with the huge Cathedral in the Altstadt (old town). Climb the seemingly endless steps to the top for a spectacular view of the city. It's well worth the effort. It's also a nice city to pass the time strolling through the old town, or in sitting in a cafe in one of the many plazas found there. If you're in the military and you're stationed in Germany, do yourself a favor and visit Strasbourg at least once.
