The French Riviera. The name alone conjures images of the rich, famous and tanned. I spent the 4th of July weekend of 2002 there, and I can tell you that it is an amazing place. A trip there can really make you feel insignificant, especially if you go to the ritzier places. The Riviera wins the dubious honor of "most expensive place I've ever been", but it still ranks as one of my absolute favorites, and I can't wait to go back. A typical day usually started with an espresso machiatto and crepes with nutella, followed by the beach. Night time was spent sampling the variety of pubs and bars in Old Nice. Truly paradise. I stayed in Nice most of the time, and did a day trip to Monaco and Monte Carlo. Most of the cheaper accomodations can be found in Nice ("cheaper" being a relative term...), so the smart thing to do is stay there and do day trips. Of course, Nice is a city that truly lives up to its name, and you may find yourself just spending most of your time on the beach, as I did. Vieille Nice (Old Nice) is a pretty part of the city close to the beach, and it gets pretty lively at night too. A bit of trivia - most people don't know that Nice was actually part of Italy until 1860. Below are some pictures of Nice Click Here for Monaco & Monte Carlo Click on picture to enlarge... Here's what the Riviera looks like as you drive along the coast - a drive everyone should be so fortunate as to do at least once (I've done it twice!):
