Munich. Where do I start? The Travel Bible (aka Lonely Planet's Western Europe on a Shoestring) sums it up best: Munich is the Bavarian Mother Lode. When most people think of Germany, it's visions of Munich that usually pop into their heads; Lederhosen, gigantic beer halls playing oom-pah-pah music, bratwurst; you name it, you'll find it here. Throw Oktoberfest into the mix and you've got one of the best party cities in Europe. I've been lucky enough to go to Munich no less than 5 times, and I've always had a blast. If you go, make the pilgrimige to the Hofbrauhaus. A local Munich girl I met once told me that the locals have a saying about the Hofbrauhaus: "Only tourists and assholes go there." But it's still fun. A word of warning for anyone planning a trip to Oktoberfest: book early! Some places start taking reservations up to a full year in advance. That said, Munich is definitely a European highlight.
