You can keep your Madden, for my money, Tecmo Bowl is the greatest video game ever made.
This is the first version. It featured only 14 teams and each team had only 2 running plays and 2 pass plays. Sounds primitive now, but at the time, it was revolutionary.
Here's a later version. By this time, Tecmo featured all the teams, and you had several passing and running plays to choose from.
In the second version, the Patriots were pretty much the worst team in the game. At quarterback, you had a choice between Steve Grogan (who was 137 years old at the time) and Marc Wilson. Here's the profile on Grogan:
